What can be done about winter blues at work?

Short days, long nights and frosty temperatures can make us feel down during the winter months.

In our part of the world, the winter blues are not uncommon and can manifest themselves in a low mood, a lack of motivation and a loss of interest in things. But we don't have to go along with the season.

How employers can prevent the winter blues from taking hold in the workplace

  1. Letting in plenty of light
This can be achieved, for example, by flexible working hours and breaks in daylight. The natural light of the sun is ideal here. If natural light is not possible in the workplace, care should still be taken to ensure that the room is well lit.

  2. Ergonomics and movement
These aspects always play a role in the workplace, but they become especially important during the winter months. With good ergonomic design, it is possible to stay more alert and attentive and to counteract fatigue and discomfort. In addition, sports and exercise cause the release of endorphins, which boost the mood. Offers such as company sports or gym subsidies are effective approaches here.

  3. Awareness-raising and information events
SAD is an issue that should be taken seriously. Awareness-raising measures can help to reduce stigmatisation and increase awareness of mental health within the company. External services such as EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) programmes, which provide a point of contact for employees experiencing mental health issues, can also be used to support staff.

  4. Highlight the bright side of winter
Winter is not just cold and dark. It is also a season of atmospheric Christmas parties, good food and fellowship, creating a sense of togetherness. If the weather plays along, breaks can also be used for walks in the winter landscape.
