Martin Ballendat How many legs does a chair need?

All good things come in threes. Whether Martin Ballendat was guided by this saying, we do not know. But the designer enriches our chair collection with an example that has what it takes to become an icon - an icon on three legs, so minimalist, innovative and functional that it has won numerous design awards. We are, of course, talking about the VS Stakki.

An early sketch for the multi-award-winning, sustainable chair Stakki, created by designer Martin Ballendat

"Iconic in itself is the VS Stakki, because it realizes a new form guideline and thus creates a very unusual shape. Viewed from above, it looks like a graphically reduced symbol, independent with a great recognition value. At the same time super light, space-saving and incredibly comfortable."

– Martin Ballendat

Martin Ballendat (*1958 in Bochum) has worked with his studio for numerous international companies and brands. His furniture can be found in homes, but also in the contract and office sector. In the case of VS Stakki, he took the design task to an extreme. He wanted to reduce the chair to the absolute minimum. His vision: the least conceivable, the maximum of function. A chair that gives every freedom and does everything. The result? Standing firmly on three legs - and even growing into the sky if necessary.

Reduce to the max

Rub your eyes: The VS Stakki by Martin Ballendat is a chair not only to sit on, but also to marvel at. With the greatest possible minimalism, a piece of seating furniture has been created here that offers more, not less. More function, more comfort, more for the eye.

Made from one piece, the VS Stakki stands on three legs, has a triangular seat and a backrest in the shape of a T. Less is not possible. Nevertheless, the ascetic among chairs is not joyless. For a colorful round we put it in four colors - red, blue, yellow and black. Whether you choose one color, two or all four is up to you. Our tip: Go ahead and dare to do something!

VS Stakki presents itself extremely well in any environment, for example in schools, universities, cafeterias or even in private homes. Especially in cafeterias, where it can get crowded at peak times, a small chair can provide great relief.

For indoor and outdoor use: The VS Stakki has been fully tested and found to be safe (GS tested safety, LGA tested for harmful substances, BIFMA X5.1/X6.1). The TÜV tests also certify that it is suitable and approved for indoor and outdoor use.

Indoor/outdoor chair: Nothing about VS Stakki is too much. But everything is possible with it. You can sit on it from any side and the flexible backrest provides comfortable support in any position. An unusual, absolutely unique shape. This is what an innovative chair looks like.

Seven at a stroke

What happens to chairs when no one is sitting on them and the room is being used for other purposes? Correct: Then they should be stable and stackable to save space. No problem with the VS Stakki from Martin Ballendat.

The chair can manage up to seven floors without tipping or swaying. Another plus: You don't have to be a strongman to lift the lightweight up and down.

Six triangular VS Stakki chairs were pushed under a round table to save space

The VS Stakki is not only a space miracle vertically, but also horizontally. The basic triangular shape allows chairs to be pushed together like pieces of cake. This means that up to eight VS Stakkis can fit around a round table with a diameter of one metre.

How do you like to sit?

Preconceptions persist. For example, that the backrest of the chair is at the back, a backrest, that is. But does it have to be like that? With the VS Stakki, Martin Ballendat proves that there is another way. If you want to sit astride or sideways on the chair for a change: The triangular seat and the T-shaped backrest make it possible.

Our small sitters are especially grateful for this freedom. That's why the VS Stakki is not only available as an adult model, but also with a reduced seat height of 38 centimeters for children. Of course, the chair has been tested all around and found to be safe.

"The triangular shape is smart. It gives you the freedom to sit however you feel like. And it doesn't get in the way, even if you want to stretch your legs out to the side."

So that you can use the chair not only indoors, but also outdoors, we make it from a weather-resistant plastic. And supply with it the table Drop, which is also stackable.

Is the VS Stakki sustainable?

Martin Ballendat's VS Stakki also makes us proud when it comes to sustainability. Its minimalist form requires little material, and what little there is can be easily recycled. Because it consists of only one homogeneous part, the Stakki can be easily shredded and recycled. But, quite honestly, we don't want to do that.

Because, like all of our furniture, the VS Stakki is exceptionally durable and designed to last a long time. Once you take it to your heart, you won't want to get rid of it, we promise.

Portrait of the architect Stefan Behnisch

Stefan Behnisch

Aesthetic, functional, yet uncompromisingly sustainable: the name of architect Stefan Behnisch is a byword for architecture that conserves resources and makes people feel comfortable. What is less well-known is the fact that he has also created furniture systems that are so timelessly appealing and flexible that they last for decades - whether in the German Bundestag or on the other side of the Atlantic.

The engineer Jürgen Greubel is known for his linear and restrained design. Our design partner creates products with function to the fore. Today, his creations are collectors’ pieces; his focus is on electrically powered utilitarian objects. With VS he creates table systems that can be intelligently incorporated into modern offices and conference rooms. At the same time, they can be individually adapted to your needs. How do classrooms become inspiring learning environments with maximum flexibility? The American David A Stubbs II has been pondering this question for a long time. His passion is to enhance schools by fostering creativity, health, and well-being. And the path to this is through vibrant, modular furniture that maximizes the potential of every space. This is not only desks and chairs, but also cupboards, platforms – and even a tent.
